Our Playist

Hi friends! Welcome to my final blog post of the semester! This week I'm going to be sharing some cool music I found from different cultures around the world. I hope you enjoy! The first song I found was from a Native American artist called Snow Raven SUOR. I thought this video was pretty cool because she was making nature sounds with her voice. After looking into her story, I learned that she was born in a small village in Sakha, which is in a region in Russia called the Arctic Siberia. When she was around 3 years old, she began learning how birds and other animals communicated. Just hearing how she was able to mimic the winds and the waves of the ocean just put me in awe of how talented she is. (Modern/Asia) The next music choice I have is pretty personal to me. My mother was born and raised in the Bahamas. Junkanoo is just one giant street festival that takes place on Boxing Dat and New Year’s. A lot of the costumes use cowbells, brass instruments, and goat skin drums. Growing u...

Music and Rituals

Image
I’ve had many musical experiences with ‘rituals.’ My faith is a huge part of my life and who I am today. I’ve been going to church since I was a little girl, and something about being in the presence of God is so powerful that it brings me to my knees sometimes. In His presence, I’ve found peace, joy, comfort, and answers to my many questions. Growing up in church, I had to do many plays and participate in different dances for certain events and holiday services. (Here is a silly little dance I did when I was 10 for our Youth Sunday. At the moment, I wasn’t having fun, but looking back on it, I just can’t stop looking at how cute we all looked 15:09-21:06 ;)  Anytime we have a praise and worship night, whether it’s through FCA or just one we found through NewSpring (our church), there’s always great music and food! It’s always such a good time because everyone is there to worship the Lord, it’s a ‘No-judgement Zone,’ and the amount of new people that I’ve met in the past 3 months a...

Music and Family

Backstory: Hi friends! Welcome back to this week’s post. I’m excited for you all to read this because my interviewee is my grandmother! I chose her because her playing music around the house growing up influenced a lot of my music taste today. Here's a picture of us both! I hope you all enjoy this week’s post!  Me: Hi Grandma! How are you? Grandma: Hey baby, I’m doing alright, how are you doing? Me: I’m doing good! I wanted to call you to see if you’d be up for an interview about your experiences listening to music.  Grandma: Oh! Of course, I’m free to .  Me: Great! So my first question for you is when was your earliest memory of listening to music, and if you remember, what song was it? Grandma: Oh, that’s a good question, I’d have to say, my earliest memory of music was when I was around maybe 3 years old (This was 1963) And I don’t know what it was called but the words were ‘Take out the paper in the trash, you won’t get your money back, don’t talk back yakety yak,’ Si...

Music and Gender

Image
The biggest gender influence on music is what is 'normal' for boys and girls to listen to. I think of artists like Beyonce, Taylor Swift, and One Direction. These are usually considered 'girly music artists' and, for boys, artists like J. Cole, Lil Baby, and Kendrick Lamar. Notice a trend? It's considered 'weird' if a boy likes to listen to 'girly pop music' and if a girl likes to listen to rap.  I also think of how the music industry treats men and women. If you ever listen to the type of music artists are making, how they present themselves on stage, and what they are talking about. Women are often so sexualized in the industry, whether it's from other people or if they are sexualizing themselves. It just makes me think of how hard women have to work to even get half the same recognition as their male counterparts do. The song 'The Man' by Taylor Swift comes into my mind whenever I think about this topic. She talks about how easy her pe...

Music and Me!

Hi everyone and welcome back to my blog! My name is Angela I grew up in a small town in Lake Butler, FL, and really haven't had much experience with music other than my 4th grade recorder performance. But, I do enjoy listening to music whether it's on a streaming service or watching my little brother perform in the band. I can't wait to go on this journey together with y'all! My absolute go-to currently is Boogie Shoes by KC & The Sunshine Band. I don't know what it is about that song but it just scratches something in my brain so well. I will play that song on repeat so many times because it's just too good! A song I always love to play, whether it's in my car or walking to class is Firm Foundation (He Won't) by Maverick City featuring Chandler Moore and Cody Carnes. I really love this song because it got me through some of the hardest times of my life. It just reminds me that no matter what happens in life, Jesus is my firm foundation and will alwa...
